As 2023 wound down and eyes turned to the new year (via Christmas lunch), we all naturally started to think about all we’re going to do in 2024.
The world of construction is no different it seems. Almost 100,000 planning permissions were lodged in January 2023 alone. And while that total will be a mix of residential and commercial builds they all have one thing in common – glass.
Glass in Construction
Glass is one of the oldest materials used in construction. Its versatility means it can be used in windows, doors, partition walls and even glass floors. It can be moulded into almost any shape and can fit pretty much any space, with eye catching results.
More and more, glass is being used not just as a standout feature, but as a key building material.
Which glass is the strongest?
If anything is being used in construction, you need it to be durable. Glass is strong enough to stand up to the (often not so) Great British weather as well as the wear and tear of everyday life.
Perhaps the most used glass product throughout the world, toughened glass (or tempered glass) is one of the mainstays of Tufwell Glass. Toughened glass is used for a massively diverse range of functions including glass partitions, glass doors, furniture, glass balustrades, glass shelving and even signs.
Toughened glass is formed by passing annealed glass through a temperature and time controlled oven furnace. Compared to standard annealed glass, toughened glass offers far greater mechanical strength and controlled fracturing to prevent shards in the event of breakage.
Tufwell has its own dedicated glass tempering facility and can provide toughened glass sheets up to 2400mm x 3600mm in thicknesses between 6mm and 19mm.
