20 March marked the first day of spring, an occasion captured in the stunning series by British glass artist Peter Layton, Arrival of Spring. Layton has been at the forefront of British studio glass since the 1970s and has produced exceptional works, many of which are now collector’s items. But you don’t have to be a glass art collector to have inspiring shaped glass in your home or workplace.
Computer numerical control (CNC) machines have transformed the glass industry, making shaped glass accessible and affordable. CNC is the automation of machine tools by means of computers executing pre-programmed sequences of machine control commands. CNC machines can cut glass to size with greater speed, efficiency and accuracy than those controlled by hand wheels or levers or mechanically automated by cams alone. CNC processing allows glass to be cut to size to produce virtually any shape for any glass product.
Take, for example, glass furniture. Glass tables and desks can give your office a stylish, modern feel. Long gone are the days when the only available shape for glass table tops was rectangular. Glass can be cut to size to provide circular glass conference tables, bow-shaped glass tables, or glass workstations with a left or right-hand curved return which are ergonomically shaped to facilitate meeting at the desk and provide additional work top space. Numerous finishes are available, including clear, tinted and frosted glass. Additionally, glass storage can complement a modern workspace, creating a sleek aesthetic in an executive office.
Shaped glass can also transform your home. Kitchen glass splashbacks can be curved to accommodate cooker hoods and are made from toughened glass to ensure heat resistance and usage behind the hob. Glass worktops provide a bright, fresh centrepiece, with smooth, clean lines which add a modern feel to any kitchen. Shaped glass splashbacks in bathrooms can be fitted around any object, whilst glass tiles offer a fresh-looking design which is easy to clean. The options are limitless.
