Glass drilling and shaping
Tufwell Glass’ sophisticated glass drilling and shaping technology reveals the full versatility of glass in architectural uses. With it, architects and designers can appreciate the diverse array of decorative glass options ready to be incorporated into any project – with spectacular results.
Glass is an excellent material to use in architectural installations, but because of its fragility, it requires expert care and attention to prepare for use. Tufwell Glass utilises various methods to drill, shape and treat glass to our clients’ specifications, so each piece is ready for installation.
Shaping Glass
Our specialist CNC drill stations can be controlled to produce almost any conceivable shape from glass sheets, be it for a functional application or to create a stunning visual effect. Glass can be cut into smaller shapes to fit a space or specific function, into more manageable sizes for manoeuvrability during installation, or into interesting shapes to add dimension and interest. Where a glass balustrade or other type of installation meets an irregular shape, the edge can be cut to the exact dimensions of the join to create a seamless effect where the organic surface meets sleek modern glass.
Drilling Glass
Drilling holes in glass sheets is a time and cost effective way to tailor readily available materials to your needs. Our CNC machine can create holes of any required size, and across a range of glass panel types to meet any exact specifications.
Drilled holes allow glass to be easily mounted onto a flat surface or bolted together as part of a larger structure. Holes can also be drilled to add functionality to the glass: handles, hinges, or other fixtures can be fitted into custom-made cut-outs for easy installation.
Edging Glass
Unprocessed glass edges are sharp and pose a safety hazard, therefore finishing the edges is essential. There are a number of finishes which Tufwell Glass offers, which are both functional and aesthetic. Flat polish, is one of the most aesthetic finishes to a glass edge, where the edges are sanded smooth to remove any chips or irregularities and get rid of any sharpness. The edge is then polished to restore its transparency.
Heat-Soaking Glass Panels
Once the glass has been shaped, drilled, and/or polished, it can then be toughened or laminated to fit the strength requirements for its intended use. Toughened or tempered glass is formed by passing annealed glass through a temperature and time controlled oven furnace. Compared to standard annealed glass, toughened glass offers greater mechanical strength and controlled fracturing to prevent dangerous shards in the event of breakage.
