Noise can be an unwelcome part of everyday life, negatively impacting health, well-being and productivity. With no sign of society getting quieter, we must look for ways of mitigating noise pollution in our homes and workplaces. One such solution is acoustic laminated glass.
What is acoustic laminated glass?
Acoustic glass is a type of laminated glass specifically designed to reduce sound intrusion. Laminated glass is formed by sandwiching two or more sheets of either annealed or toughened glass around a resin interlayer. The most common interlayers are Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) and Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB). In the acoustic laminated glass, PVB is preferred as a more effective acoustic membrane. As with all laminated glass, acoustic laminated glass has the appearance of a single pane of glass.
How does it work?
The intrinsic properties of glass work to reflect noise. Glass, as a rigid material, is a poor conductor of sound. However standard glass, be it single, double or even triple-paned, can do relatively little to prevent noise from entering your home or workplace. It is only when glass is laminated with a PVB membrane that it takes on effective noise-reduction qualities. The PVB membrane reduces noise by absorbing the sound energy, ensuring that sound waves are not transmitted through the glass.
What are its benefits?
Acoustic laminated glass will result in a noticeable reduction in noise transmission from outside to inside. This is important in the context of the harmful health associations of prolonged exposure to noise. Acoustic laminated glass also protects health by absorbing harmful UV rays, allowing beneficial natural light to be transmitted.
Acoustic laminated glass can improve safety and security. Its PVB interlayer and overall thickness allow the acoustic laminated glass to withstand impact and resist penetration. In fact, as with all laminated glass, acoustic laminated glass is a type of safety glass.
Acoustic laminated glass also prevents heat loss through its multiple layers, thereby improving the energy efficiency of a building.
These benefits make acoustic laminated glass the sound choice for your home or workplace. Contact Tufwell Glass to find out more on 01293 533 533 or at sales@tufwell.co.uk
